About Evan Albers

Where did you learn to row and who was your first coach?

I learned to row at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, USA, coached by Doug Welling and Ry Hills.

What inspires you about sport?

Nobody has to do this. It is in fact, fairly miserable at times. The wages of sport are long hours, brutal conditions, and for nearly all, little compensation. In practical terms, winning is useless - you cannot eat a victory, nor will it keep the rain off your head. Yet countless hours are poured into the pursuit of victory - by athletes, coaches, support staff, friends and family. It is simply because we have decided to give a damn. And that makes every sacrifice worth it. I find that deeply inspiring.

Explain your earliest memory of The Boat Race

I had just walked on to the rowing team at Bowdoin, and one of the upperclassmen told me about The Boat Race - I remember thinking it sounded awesome.

Do you relish in hours in the gym and miles in the dark, or do you live for race days?

Live for race days. I love training as well, but there is nothing like the feeling of racing. I would do it every day if I could.

What's the secret to managing elite-level sport with studying at one of the top universities in the world?

Good sleep. Everything starts there.
