About Alexander McClean

Where did you learn to row and who was your first coach?

The King’s School, Parramatta, Australia - Guy Morgan.

What inspires you about sport?

The ability to improve myself and see out how far I can push myself to achieve at my highest potential.

Explain your earliest memory of The Boat Race

My family have always been avid followers of the boat race, so I have early memories of my father watching The Boat Race every year and explaining the historical relevance of the race.

Do you relish in hours in the gym and miles in the dark, or do you live for race days?

In the moment it might be difficult to relish the long hours spent working towards your goals but I do really appreciate the growth each of those moments affords me. The race days are merely the culmination and a small reward for all the hard work.

What's the secret to managing elite-level sport with studying at one of the top universities in the world?

I honestly believe the two are conducive of each other - working hard in sport lends itself to dedication in the classroom and vice versa. To me they’re very much the same skill and it’s quite easy to move in and out of a training time and study time as long as you’re able to maintain the goal of improvement.
