Meet your Cambridge University Boat Club Presidents for The CHANEL J12 Boat Race 2027: Simon Hatcher and Eloise Etherington.

Simon Hatcher is a two-time victorious Blue for Cambridge, rowing in the bow seat on both occasions.

He is studying for a PhD in Nuclear Energy, and previously attended Brown University. He has also interned at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in California.

Simon hails from Oregon, which is where he started his rowing career. He competed for the United States at the 2021 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

He remembers seeing a poster about The Boat Race at his first club, and his top piece of life advice is: “Buy yourself a candy bar every once in a while. You’ve earned it.”

Women’s President Eloise Etherington holds the accolade of having been the youngest competitor on Boat Race Day 2025. She comes from South-East London and learned to row at Globe Rowing Club, in Docklands.

Eloise is studying undergraduate Natural Sciences and attends Gonville and Caius College. Eloise rowed in the Cambridge Women’s Reserve Boat, Blondie, in 2025 and 2026.

She has also competed for Great Britain at the World Rowing Under-19 Championships in 2023 and 2024.

She credits having a top-class support system around you as key to managing both academics and sporting commitments at Cambridge University.
