About Ruslan Ramsay
Where did you learn to row and who was your first coach?
The Leys School, Cambridge - Simon Hames.
What inspires you about sport?
The thrill of winning knowing that all the hard work and the team effort paid off. It’s also the exhilaration that you get from competing.
Explain your earliest memory of The Boat Race
For me it was The Boat Race in 2022. I remember it quite well because I was finishing school that year and I already had my offer from Oxford. Naturally, I was supporting Oxford but secretly because my school was based in Cambridge and one of our assistant coaches was none other than Seb Benzecry, so it was awkward in supporting Oxford while in Cambridge and seeing our coach racing in the light blues.
Do you relish in hours in the gym and miles in the dark, or do you live for race days?
I certainly live for race days. The hype and the adrenaline is on a whole different level on race days, nothing really prepares you for it. You just embrace it and give it your best.
What's the secret to managing elite-level sport with studying at one of the top universities in the world?
Having strong motivation to succeed. That desire to win but also wanting to do well academically forces you to be disciplined and organised.
