About Lucy Buchanan

Where did you learn to row and who was your first coach?

Balliol College - I had a few coaches through Covid but Oli Gerrard properly taught me to row.

What inspires you about sport?

I’m inspired by what the human body can achieve with training and discipline, often going far beyond what we think is possible, and how when combined with coaching and team spirit these individual efforts can turn into something much bigger than yourself.

Explain your earliest memory of The Boat Race

I have watched The Boat Race every year I can remember with my parents. My dad rowed in Isis so I have always been team Oxford.

Do you relish in hours in the gym and miles in the dark, or do you live for race days?

Both. I enjoy training, moving my body and pushing myself with the team. Then I love the feeling of it all coming together on race day and having the chance to be competitive and show what you've all been working towards.

What's the secret to managing elite-level sport with studying at one of the top universities in the world?

Planning your time, prioritising, and being efficient with everything you do.
