About Fergus Pim

Where did you learn to row and who was your first coach?

I tried rowing a bit at Dorney, but really taught by Tom Young at the GB Start program in Scotland.

What inspires you about sport?

The opportunity to prove to yourself how physically and mentally tough you and the team are.

Explain your earliest memory of The Boat Race

My father rowed in The Boat Race (for Cambridge in 1997), and I was regularly shown his oar and the tape recording of the TV coverage when I was young.

Do you relish in hours in the gym and miles in the dark, or do you live for race days?

I don't relish it, but I do find it satisfying. It's Type 2 fun.

What's the secret to managing elite-level sport with studying at one of the top universities in the world?

I think the two complement each other quite well - doing some exercise helps me concentrate on work; and sitting through lectures makes me want to get out and row.
