About Ava Milne
Where did you learn to row and who was your first coach?
Exeter College Boat Club, Rachel Cannon.
What inspires you about sport?
The fact that you everyone who competes has pushed themselves to extremes, both for themselves and for their teammates.
Explain your earliest memory of The Boat Race
I watched it in my first year and was so proud that people from my college who had learnt to row there were racing this incredible course and being watched by people around the country.
Do you relish in hours in the gym and miles in the dark, or do you live for race days?
Whilst I love putting in the miles and hours, as they make me feel like I’m putting in the time and the effort to build something so strong, nothing can compare to a race day- when it goes well! That being said, nothing is worse than the stress before a race for me.
What's the secret to managing elite-level sport with studying at one of the top universities in the world?
Multitasking is key - both for fitting in uni work (e.g. flashcards on the minibus) and fun (enjoying every session with your teammates). However, the real key is to make sure that you try to enjoy every moment of your time, be that at rowing or studying, so that you keep focused on the good and what you are gaining.
