About Maximilian Deering
Where did you learn to row and who was your first coach?
St Paul's School, Smithy.
What inspires you about sport?
I find watching sport immensely emotional, and watching my favourite athletes finish first after not only investing time, but putting it all on the line is incredibly inspiring. I watch Chris Hoy winning the 2004 Olympic 1km before every one of my races; the world record was broken four times before his run, and to see him delivering a fifth world record performance whilst under immense pressure is incredible.
Explain your earliest memory of The Boat Race
Being incredibly bored waiting for the race to restart after the swimmer jumped in in 2012. Eleven year old me probably had more exciting places to be.
Do you relish in hours in the gym and miles in the dark, or do you live for race days?
I really enjoy training – during a good session anything seems possible (mid-race I often discover that’s not the case).
What's the secret to managing elite-level sport with studying at one of the top universities in the world?
Working hard and ensuring you enjoy both. Competing at a high level in sport is a privilege, as is the opportunity to learn about something you’re interested in so it’s hard not to enjoy balancing the two.
