About Charlotte Rudd

Where did you learn to row and who was your first coach?

I learnt to row on the Norfolk broads in a small wooden rowing dinghy, taught by my dad but mostly left to figure it out! I learnt to scull at St John’s College School and to sweep at Murray Edwards College Boat Club.

What inspires you about sport?

The success that comes from hard work, dedication, commitment and perseverance. I come from an underdog college and have never considered myself particularly sporty but through learning to row I’ve understood that hard work and determination can pay off more than “talent” or “sportiness”. Anyone can do this sport and anyone can become good at it if they are willing to try hard enough.

Explain your earliest memory of The Boat Race

My grandad, Edward Tozer, rowed in Goldie in1965 (I think) so my earliest memories of the boat race would be his stories and watching it with my family.

Do you relish in hours in the gym and miles in the dark, or do you live for race days?

I love being on the water whatever the weather, boat, crew. I just love the peace of water and the movement of a boat through the water. Even when it isn’t as tranquil, the challenge, pushing through bad conditions, struggling, overcoming wind, rain, cold or whatever with your friends all striving to move something the best we can together is what excites me.

What's the secret to managing elite-level sport with studying at one of the top universities in the world?

Well I’ve only just started trialling so we’ll see! But I’m pretty organised and good at managing my time so I imagine those two things will help a lot.
