THE OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE MEN'S BLUE BOATS
The Oxford and Cambridge Men's Blue Boats for The Gemini Boat Race 2022 on Sunday 3 April have been announced.
The crews
The Gemini Boat Race has a unique place in the British psyche, attracting the interest of millions of people worldwide and over 250,000 spectators on the banks of the Thames.
The race is one of the highest profile rowing events in the world and the annual focal point of a rivalry that spans at least 185 years. The long-standing tradition of formally announcing the crews marks a very important day for each of the student athletes named. This year, The Men’s Boat Race looks set to be another world-class event, showcasing the very best student athletes in the world’s best-known Varsity match.
The Boat Race, was one of the first large scale events to be cancelled in 2020, and was relocated to Ely last year. Today, we announce the crews racing between Putney and Mortlake on the Championship Course for the 167th Men's Boat Race.
Today Oxford and Cambridge introduced crews with fantastic young athletes representing their Universities at the highest level. The crews for the 2022 race comprise an incredible array of talent across all the squads, and it is a testament to the enduring attraction of this unique event that the crews have athletes in the squads who competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
It is also a unique aspect of the Boat Race that oarsmen and women who learnt to row at their College on the Cam or the Isis can within 3 years find themselves in a crew alongside Olympians. The dedication of all these athletes is incredible to commit to an intense training programme whilst also maintaining their full-time academic studies.
The 2022 men’s crews are also truly global crews with 7 nationalities represented and the average ages 25.
Cambridge has three former Blues; President and Cox, Charlie Marcus, James Bernard and Ollie Parish, whose younger brother is coxing the Cambridge Women’s Blue Boat. They are joined by; Tom George and Ollie Wynne-Griffith two GB 2020 Olympic Bronze medallists, Simon Scheurch Swiss 2016 Olympic Gold Medallist in the Lightweight Coxless Four, Jamie Hunter, another former Lightweight international rower who is a two time World Championship Silver medallist as a Lightweight and a World Championship Bronze medallist in the Openweight Coxless pair. Australian U23 international and former Cal Berkeley rower George Finlayson and undergraduate Luca Ferraro complete the Cambridge line up.
Oxford men’s crew has five British crew members, with only one former Blue, stroke man Tobias Schröder Cox Jack Tottem is making his Boat Race debut, British sculler and 2020 Olympic Silver medallist, Angus Groom sits in the seven seat fellow GB Olympian and Bronze medallist Charlie Elwes sits at six.
