This Sunday, Oxford Women will line up against international opposition at the famous Head of the Charles Regatta.
Only roughly a month into the season, this first opportunity to race is sure to provide a strong test as the crew contest the competitive Women’s Championship Eights division.
Since its origin in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta has welcomed the world’s best crews to the banks of the Charles River for a two-day rowing competition. Across the weekend, nearly 9,000 athletes will row in over 1,900 boats in 61 events, attracting around 300,000 spectators. This year’s Regatta is presented by BNY Mellon, who are the title sponsor of The Boat Race.
The Oxford crew has an international feel itself, with crew members hailing from Britain, Estonia, Switzerland, Canada, America and Germany. It features two victorious returners from their 2013 campaign, President and returning Blue Maxie Scheske, and Osiris 3-woman Hannah Ledbury. The full crew list is as follows (from bow to cox): Hannah Roberts, Elizabeth Fenje, Hannah Ledbury, Elo Luik, Nadine Graedel Iberg, Amber de Vere, Laura Savarese, Maxie Scheske, Olivia Cleary.
Racing against the OUWBC crew in the Women’s Championship Eights will be a crew from The 1927 Boat Club, the joint boat club for Oxford and Cambridge Women’s Boat Race alumni. They are joined on the Charles by two crews from Crabtree Boat Club, the Cambridge Men’s alumni club, who will compete in the Men’s Master Fours and Men’s Alumni Eights. The Crabtree eight will be stroked by double Olympic Gold medallist and four-time Cambridge Blue, Tom James.
