Goldie captain and 6 seat Al Taylor called at the toss and won. Goldie selected the Surrey station. There was a strong blustery South-Westerly wind on the day. This resulted in flat water and a tailwind off the start but made for challenging conditions and a strong headwind after the Surrey bend. The water flattened from Barnes Bridge to the finish.
The crews got away cleanly from the start with Isis rating 44 versus Goldie on 43 and Isis took an early lead. As the crews came down to 36 stokes per minute along the line of boats Isis pushed out to a half a length lead. By the Black Buoy Isis were striking 35 and led Goldie striking 36 by three quarters of a length. Both crews maintained their rates of striking and Isis edged out to a length and a quarter shortly after Barn Elms.
Coming around the Fulham bend Isis were warned three times by the umpire and told to “take the bend!”, and they responded. Goldie continued to press but by the Milepost Isis had slightly extended their lead to a length and a half. Both crews settled their rates of striking slightly: Goldie to 35 and Isis to 33 passing Harrods Depositary.
Approaching Hammersmith Bridge, the umpire warned both crews to “Return to your stations!” As the Surrey bend swung into Goldie’s favour, they reduced Isis’ lead to exactly one length at the Bridge. As the course turned into the wind, both crews further reduced their rates, and passing St. Paul’s School boathouse, Isis were striking 32 to Goldie’s 33. Isis were warned repeatedly coming round the Surrey bend and as the crews reached the top of Chiswick Eyot Goldie put in a push into the worsening conditions and regained overlap on Isis.
Coming down Chiswick Eyot into rough conditions, both crews were warned and maintained their rhythms despite being hit by frequent waves. Goldie continued to push at 32 strokes a minute while Isis were striking 31, and by Chiswick Steps Goldie had further reduced Isis’ lead to half a length. Goldie continued to move back and drew level with Isis at Chiswick Pier. The crews then remained almost dead level for over a minute with both striking 31, and had moved towards the Middlesex bank as conditions continued to be challenging. Goldie were then repeatedly warned to return to their station and passing the Bandstand Isis had pushed their bows back into a narrow lead of about a third of a length. Isis were then warned three times approaching Barnes Bridge, but continued to creep ahead and passed through Barnes Bridge with a lead of three-quarters of a length.
After the bridge the water flattened out and both crews were able to increase their rates. Isis were striking 32 and continued to slip ahead despite Goldie pushing hard and increasing their rate back to 33. Isis were warned again as the crews took the final bend, but increased their lead to a length and a quarter as the finish line came into sight. Goldie continued to push hard and further increased their rate to 35, but Isis’ rhythm remained solid and their lead continued to grow to two lengths at the finish. Isis finished in 18:55, 2 lengths or 6 seconds ahead of Goldie after a very hard fought race with challenging conditions in the middle sections.
