The two Reserve crews that will compete in the Isis/Goldie Race have been announced and weighed-in today.
Weighing-in today, it was the Goldie crew that just topped the scales, with a slightly heavier average weight of 1.7kg per man (without cox) more than their Dark Blue rivals. This is the closest weight difference between the two Reserve crews since 2008, when the difference was just 1kg.
The heaviest and lightest oarsmen this year are a pair of returners from The 2013 Isis/Goldie contest – the heaviest is Austrian Alexander Leichter in the Goldie boat at 100.2kg, and the lightest is Brit Iain Mandale in the Isis crew at 71.8kg.
There are several returners between the two crews from last year’s thrilling encounter which was eventually won by Isis by a third of a length. Returning from that victorious Isis crew are Mandale and Nicholas Hazell, as well as spare man James Mountain. Another returner from the Dark Blues is Chris Fairweather at stroke, who was part of the 2012 record breaking Isis crew. In the Goldie crew, Leichter is the only returner from last year’s Race, with 2013 spare man and fellow Austrian Florian Herbst and spare cox Rosemary Ostfeld stepping up into the crew this year. Incidentally, this is the first time ever that there have been two Austrians in the same boat.
James Fraser-Mackenzie in the Isis crew will be the only oarsman with current Zimbabwean nationality to have ever competed in the Reserve Race (and none have competed in The Boat Race). Other than Fraser-Mackenzie and American bow seat John Redos, the entirety of the rest of the crew is British. There is a slightly more international flavour to the Goldie crew which features just four Brits, plus Irishman Chris Black, Austrians Leichter and Herbst, and Americans Jason Lupatkin and cox Ostfeld.
This will be the fourth time ever that the two crews in the Reserve Race have been both coxed by women – having previously been the case in the 1983, 1991 and 2012 Races – with both Sophie Shawdon and Rosemary Ostfeld competing in the Reserve Race for the first time.
The 2014 Isis Goldie Race will take place at 5:25pm on Sunday 6th April, half an hour before The 2014 BNY Mellon Boat Race.
