Isabell von Loga, a German native, has been elected President of the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club for the 2016/17 season and will lead the Dark Blues into next year’s Race, the second under the title sponsorship of Cancer Research UK.
The announcement follows a re-election at the Club last weekend after the previously elected Elo Luik took the decision to step down from the prestigious role to dedicate more time to her studies.
A second year DPhil student in Musuloskeletal Sciences at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, Isabell brings a wealth of diverse sporting experience to her new presidency.
“I am absolutely thrilled to have been elected President of the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club and it is a real honour to lead the Club into the new season. Our outgoing President Maddy has laid down a fantastic foundation for me to build upon with the Club and I look forward to what I’m sure will be a challenging but extremely rewarding experience.”
As a high school athlete Isabell represented her country in shot putting at the 2006 Junior World Championships in Beijing, before scooping a bronze medal in the 2007 U20 European Championships.
Her shot putting career continued at Princeton University where Isabell learned to juggle her busy sporting calendar with studying for an undergraduate degree in psychology and neuroscience.
However it wasn’t until Isabell arrived in the UK that she started rowing at the University of London Boat Club. Whilst reading medicine Isabell rowed competitively for Imperial College Boat Club, where she took silver at the British National Championships in the women’s 8 as well as coming 5th in the double sculls at EUSA.
Following her graduation from Imperial in 2015, Isabell earned a place at Green Templeton College and joined the OUWBC, becoming part of the reserve crew Osiris for The 2016 Newton Women’s Boat Race. The 2017 Cancer Research UK Women’s Boat Race will take place on Sunday 2nd April 2017 at 5.35pm.
