There was plenty of blue present at the first set of British Rowing Team trials in Boston this weekend, as a 2km ergo on the Saturday preceded a 5km time trial in pairs on the Sunday.
The top result on the men’s side came from the Oxford University Boat Club pairing of Tobias Schroeder and 2018/19 Boat Club President Felix Drinkall. After winning the event last year, they took a superb third place this time out and will both surely be contenders for senior team selection going forward this year. An additional OUBC pair of Charlie Pearson and Patrick Sullivan took 16th place.
The top pair from the men’s squad at Cambridge – comprised of two-times Blue Freddie Davidson and Callum Sullivan – took sixth place, whilst two further CUBC crews finished 20th and 26th places.
On the women’s side, it was the Light Blue duo of Pippa Whittaker and Patricia Smith who took the bragging rights, winning the pairs event by 1.7 seconds. The second and third CUWBC pairs finished 13th and 15th.
The offering from Oxford’s women of Beth Bridgman and Tina Christmann finished seventh in what was a fiercely competitive category.
All four clubs will be pleased with these results and their attentions will now be turning towards the next major marker on their road to The 2019 Boat Race – Trial Eights.
