Society and Environmental Policy at Worcester College. Magnus says
‘distance is my thing’ and relishes the challenge of competing in
endurance events, enjoying long distance cycling and skiing, as well as
rowing. He held US freshman erg records over 6k and 10k, and won four
consecutive IRA Championships (American Collegiate Championships) from 1999
to 2003 while at University of California, Berkeley. Teammates at
California with him included Jake Wetzel, a winner in the Oxford Blue Boat
in 2006, Scott Frandsen, who won with Oxford in 2003, as well as Chris
Kennelly, who was in the losing Dark Blue Boat in 2004 and Luke Walton, who
was in the losing Light Blue crews in 2005 and 2006. Magnus followed in the
footsteps of his father, Kent, by studying and rowing at the University of
California Berkeley. Kent rowed at Berkeley in the 60s and coached its
freshman crew from 1972 to 1979. Magnus’ brother, Lowell, is rowing in
his sophomore year at UC Berkeley. Magnus has dual UK/US citizenship - he
was born in Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, while his father was studying at
the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester.
