Drawn to Oxford by the academic course which, mixed with rowing, gives him
a unique opportunity to combine science with his own sport in a hands-on
way. Began rowing at school where he started out as a cox before switching
to rowing with humble beginnings as a spare for the freshman third boat.
Went on to win world junior bronze (coxed four) in 2000. Was part of the
Harvard University mens lightweight crew from 2001 to 2004 and won gold in
the IRA (US national collegiate champs) in 2003 (lightweight eight). Was a
semi-finalist in the Temple Cup at Henley in 2003.
