Personal bio:
World champion in the men’s four in 2003 and Olympic silver medallist
(four), 2004. Part of the now legendary 2004 Olympic men’s four race in
which Canada, the reigning world champions, missed out by mere inches to
the British men’s four stroked by Matthew Pinsent. Williams’ wife,
Buffy, was fourth in the women’s pair at the same Games and is also
studying (Science and Medicine of Athletic Performance) at Oxford this
year. For Williams the Boat Race will be the Blue Riband event in rowing
next year. He has talked passionately about the international ability on
offer across the two squads in 2004/5 and of the phenomenal athletes in the
Oxford squad who will push him in training. Was encouraged to come to
Oxford by Alumni such as Scott Frandsen (Boat Race winner in 2003) and Dan
Topolski.
