Graduated from Harvard in 2000 and worked for two years with Deutsche Bank
in New York, Baltimore and London. Father (Hartmut) coached the East German
women’s eight which won an Olympic gold in 1988. Then coached the US
women’s team from 1991 leading them to five golds at the 1995 World
Champs and Olympic medals in 1992 and 1996. Mother (Christine) sculled for
the East German national team in the late 1970s. Won with Goldie in 2003
and the Harvard v Yale Race in 2000. Wrote his dissertation last summer and
then returned home to look after his mother who had sustained a back
injury. In late 2002, Steffen had five weeks out of training due to a bad
chest infection.
