8 March 2008
Oxford University’s 2008 Boat Race crew took on a strong US national VIII
on the River Thames’s Tideway course today, only three weeks prior to the
Boat Race sponsored by Xchanging.
Oxford President and cox, Nick Brodie saw his crew twice defeat a strong
and competitive US VIII. In a fixture which comprised two pieces of eight
minutes along the course, Oxford’s Blue boat rowers showed their strength
to win by 3 lengths and 2 ½ lengths respectively.
In the first Race, Oxford took the Middlesex station, while the Americans
took Surrey. After a tight first half of the Race, Oxford managed to give
themselves a ¾ length lead by Fulham Football Club and from there on they
strengthened their position, finishing with a win of three lengths at Dove
Pier. In strengthening winds and choppy waters, the Dark Blue eight then
went on to win the second Race by 2 ½ lengths, finishing just short of
Chiswick Bridge.
