An MSc student, Charles made the US National Junior team in the Eights in 2003 and 2004. In his 2003 Freshman year at Yale, he was the bronze medallist at the IRA Regatta and came third at the Head of Charles Championships 2006 after rowing five seat. He again rowed five seat coming 2nd at the Eastern Sprints 2007 and won the Yale Harvard Varsity Race in the same year. He first saw the 2005 Race on TV when a friend was rowing in Isis.
